Out of the Blue (Aus Heiterem Himmel)
Admission: $1.00
“The recent plethora of nuclear-themed film projects might seem to be motivated more by a box-office than political consciousness. A departure from this blueprint is Out of the Blue, an anti-nuclear protest by a women's collective, the Literary Colloquium of Berlin. Divided into nine segments, Out of the Blue examines war from a frequently overlooked vantage point--that of women. The film addresses how women regard war, the roles they play in it, their fears and their preventative options. Combining statistics (e.g., in West Germany war toys represent 12% of the toy industry) and personal reaction, the vignettes range from witty and satirical to dramatic.
“The notion of the collective film project is hardly news; witness Germany in Autumn or the more recent War and Peace, two exemplary models of collaboration for politization. For women filmmakers, notably those involved in West Germany's active feminist culture, collectivity presents a viable (and desirable) alternative. It is political activism adapting itself to the screen as an outreach tool. Ideally, it dispenses with dominant notions of production, such as the hierarchical practice of ‘the' producer, ‘the' director, and ‘the' discourse. Collaborating since 1979, the Literary Colloquium worked on Out of the Blue as a decentralized unit from creative conception to financing to completion.” Laura Thielen
