Create will feature the work of over twenty Bay Area artists working in diverse media-including Attilio Crescenti, Judith Scott, William Scott, James Miles, John Patrick McKenzie, Evelyn Reyes, and Dan Miller-who have been associated with the three foremost centers for artists with developmental disabilities in the United States: San Francisco's Creativity Explored, Oakland's Creative Growth Art Center, and Richmond's National Institute of Art and Disabilities (NIAD). Create! will be the first exhibition to present work created in all three studios over the past twenty years and to consider how these remarkable artistic communities have promoted the creation of highly individual works and fostered the growth of these extraordinary artists.

  Find out more about Create
Curated by Lawrence Rinder, director of BAM/PFA, with Matthew Higgs, director of White Columns, New York City, Create will highlight the exceptional work (including painting, sculpture, and works on paper) of over twenty artists. Though they developed independently, Creative Growth, Creativity Explored, and NIAD were all founded by a visionary couple, painter Florence Katz and psychologist Elias Katz. Among the first centers in the United States to focus on the creative practice of people with developmental disabilities, these institutions grew out of, and continue to thrive within, a particularly progressive social and political climate.
