In celebration of Paul J. Karlstrom's new publication, Peter Selz: Sketches of a Life in Art (UC Press), we invite you to listen to and join in a conversation between the author and his extraordinary subject, who, among many other achievements, was the founding director of the University Art Museum (now BAM/PFA).

Karlstrom's book traces Selz's journey from German-Jewish immigrant to a career as pioneering art historian and curator. Equally cultural history and biography, it links Selz's life story with his personal commitment to political engagement.

Karlstrom, former West Coast regional director of the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art, is the editor of On the Edge of America: California Modernist Art, 1900–1950 and coauthor of Turning the Tide: Early Los Angeles Modernists, 1920–1956, among numerous other publications.
