Infatuation, discovery, surprise, epiphany - all start with a first impression. Get acquainted with an inspiring world of art and film on Free First Thursdays during the first week of every month. Encounter the work of artists, filmmakers, and scholars who shape our cultural landscape, or take a second look at visual culture from across time and around the world. Street's evocative, improvisational feature captures the anxieties and dreams of three high school girls from Rockaway, Queens. A naturalistic portrait of a place stranded between the city and the suburbs, and young women adrift between childhood and adulthood. Part of the series Screenagers.

Amy Lippert, Bancroft Research Fellow for the summer of 2006, discusses portrait daguerreotypes, archetypical gold rush images, and other works in the Bancroft Library at 100 exhibition that bring to light San Francisco's early history.

Screening - Palace of the Winds, with live Neo-Benshi Performance by Summi Kaipa.
Vipin Vijay's poetic essay about that "Holy Little Box," the radio, conceived of as a ghostly transmitter of Indian cultural artifacts. With short I'm Bobby, Xav LePlae's clever update of the classic seventies Bollywood hit Bobby with street kids instead of stars; and a live "interpretation" of the same film by local poet Kaipa. Part of the series Beyond Bollywood.

A key supporting role in this 1926 proto-disaster movie was Gaynor's big break. With The Shamrock Handicap, a lighthearted horse-racing drama set in Ireland and directed by John Ford. Part of the series Janet Gaynor.

Screening -- Bad Girl with a Heart of Gold, with Filmmaker Anuj Vaidya in Person and Live Neo-Benshi Performance by Rodney Koeneke.
An experimental, cross-dressed reappropriation of the fabulous world of Helen, Bollywood's dancing "it-girl" queen of the sixties and seventies. With Koeneke's performance reimagining a scene from Guru Dutt's venerable Pyaasa (1957), and short Dancing Othello. Part of the series Beyond Bollywood.

The artist discusses his approach to animation and presents a selection of his visually playful, emotionally powerful work, including this year's Academy Award-winning short The Moon and the Son. Part of the series John Canemaker/Winsor McCay.

Screening - Winsor McCay: His Life and Art, with presentation and booksigning by John Canemaker. Judith Rosenberg on Piano.
A special presentation based on Canemaker's acclaimed biography of pioneering cartoonist and animator McCay, featuring 35mm archival prints of McCay's greatest films. Part of the series John Canemaker/Winsor McCay.

Sokly Ny (a.k.a. Don Bonus), an eighteen-year-old Cambodian refugee living with his family in San Francisco, was assisted by San Francisco filmmaker Spencer Nakasako in making this compelling documentary about his struggles to get by in school and in life. With short Who I Became, in which a young Cambodian American takes us on a guided tour of his world, from the Tenderloin to the Alemany Housing Projects. Part of the series Screenagers.

Located at 2626 Bancroft Way, just below College Avenue near the UC Berkeley campus.

Gallery and Museum Store Hours:
Wednesday and Friday to Sunday, 11 to 5; Thursday 11 to 7. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Admission:
General admission is $8; admission for seniors, disabled persons, non-UC Berkeley students, and young adults (13 – 17) is $5; admission for BAM/PFA members, UC Berkeley students, staff and faculty, and children under 12 is free; admission for group tours is $3 per person (to arrange a group tour, call [510] 642-5188). Admission is free on the first Thursday of each month.
