They were inspired by the ideas of Wilhelm Reich, a pupil of Freud's, who had turned against him and was hated by the Freud family. He believed that the inner self did not need to be repressed and controlled. It should be encouraged to express itself. Out of this came a political movement that sought to create new beings free of the psychological conformity that had been implanted in people's minds by business and politics. This program shows how this rapidly developed in America through self- help movements like Werner Erhard's Erhard Seminar Training - into the irresistible rise of the expressive self: the Me Generation. But the American corporations soon realised that this new self was not a threat but their greatest opportunity. It was in their interest to encourage people to feel they were unique individuals and then sell them ways to express that individuality. To do this they turned to techniques developed by Freudian psychoanalysts to read the inner desires of the new self. 538 DVD. 590 PFA 0230-01-12495. |aCOPY-SPECIFC DESCRIPTION: 1 videodisc of 2 (d2) (58:47 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences ; 4 3/4 in. |aCONDITION NOTE: Last checked: 2008/07/08 Excellent condition. 600 10 Freud, Sigmund,|d1856-1939. 600 10 Bernays, Edward L.,|d1891-1995. 600 10 Reich, Wilhelm,|d1897-1957. 600 10 Erhard, Werner,|d1936- 650 0 Political socialization|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Self-help groups|zUnited States|xHistory. 650 0 Erhard seminars training|xHistory. 650 0 Consumers|xPsychology. 650 0 Consumer behavior. 650 0 Consumption (Economics)|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Motivation research (Marketing) 650 0 Public relations|xHistory|y20th century. 655 7 Television.|2mim 655 7 Mini-series.|2mim 655 7 Documentaries and factual works.|2mim 690 British films. 700 1 Curtis, Adam,|d1955- 710 2 British Broadcasting Corporation. 710 2 BN Publishing. 935 GLADN17748450 941 0 PFA 0230-01-12495.
