520 "Before Attenborough and Cousteau, there was Painlevé, the
French pioneer of underwater revelation. Jean Painlevé
trained as a scientist, but he came of age as Surrealism
exploded in Paris and was soon closely involved with its
rebellious spirit. In 1925 he made the first of nearly 200
scientific films, all of which are marked by a playful
black humor and a rare sense of nature's hidden poetry.
This selection from fifty years of passionate scientific
enquiry includes all of Painlevé's most famous films."--
