He isolates individual dancers and parts of their bodies for an episodic look that doesn't give much sense of the dance as a linear whole. This is, in effect, a reworking of the dance for film. The dancers are runners, moving to a score by Pauline Oliveros that mixes bits of bright, shimmering accordion music with the sound of a starter's gun and the distant roar of a crowd. Stretching, falling, racing slowly and briefly into one anothers' arms, they inhabit a lonely world that suggests the final dreamlike run in the film 'The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner. The Dinizulu segment is a vivid and valuable record of the late Nana Yao Opare Dinizulu, the founder of the company in 1947, and of the impressive work the troupe has done in popularizing African dance and social history in this country. Several signature works of the company are preserved here, including 'Gome, a Ghanaian square drum solo performed by Kimati Dinizulu, and 'Gum Boot,' a South African miners' dance, each of which would fit into any program of post-modernist dance 520 comfortably. The pieces, danced to traditional music, also include 'Adzabo,' a Ghanaian harvest dance for women that is filled with subtle rhythmic shifts and accents, and 'Liwa Weche,' a song from the Congo, sung by Nyota Salama, in which a woman mourns her husband's death in the mines"- -New York Times, August 19, 1991. 538 VHS NTSC. 590 PFA 0500-01-8044. |aCONDITION NOTE: Last checked: 2008/01/ 28 Excellent condition. 650 0 Modern dance. 650 0 Dance|zAfrica. 655 7 Television.|2mim 655 7 Series.|2mim 655 7 Dance.|2mim 655 7 Music.|2mim 700 1 Obenhaus, Mark. 700 1 Blumberg, Skip. 700 1 Steele, Gary. 700 1 Marpet, Bill. 700 1 Oliveros, Pauline,|d1932-2016 700 1 Fiore, Chris. 700 1 Marshall, Susan,|d1958- 700 1 Dinizulu, Gus,|d1930-1991. 710 2 KTCA-TV (Television station : Saint Paul, Minn.) 710 2 Susan Marshall and Company. 710 2 Dinizulu. 710 2 Obenhaus Films (New York, N.Y.) 740 02 Contenders. 740 02 Dinizulu. 935 GLADN17680237 941 0 PFA 0500-01-8044.
