520 Sawano, who is being hounded for payment of a debt by the
blind masseur Soetsu, kills both the masseur and his own
wife, and hires Jinzo and Senta to throw the corpses into
the swamp. Haunted by guilt and ghosts, he commits suicide
and his mistress, Okuma, takes his money. His son,
Shingaro, returns home from samurai training only to learn
of the death of both his parents. One of Soetsu's
daughters, Oshiga, sets up her own business by taking over
the shop of Tominoto as master teacher. Osono, Soetsu's
younger daughter, has no choice but to become a geisha.
Leading a dissolute playboy lifestyle, Shingaro goes to
the geisha house where Osono works. When Osono finds out
that his father has killed her father, Osono too commits
suicide. At the same time, Oshiga meets Shingaro and falls
in love, declaring her devotion to him by cutting off her
little finger. One of Oshiga's workers, Ohisa, saves her
mistress when the former shop owner, Madame Tomimoto, now
a mere salesperson, gets her revenge by pouring boiling
water on Oshiga's face, greatly disfiguring her beauty.
While Oshiga is recovering, she is torn by jealousy and
doubts about Shingaro, who is actually having an affair
with Ohisa. Shingaro kills the insanely jealous Oshiga and
runs away with Ohisa. They get
520 lost in the same swamp where Soetsu's body had been
disposed of, and, doomed by the bad karma of all the
deaths he has caused, Shingaro and Ohisa sink slowly into
the depths of the swamp.--Mariko Ikkai, Lisa Berkson.
