A young sailor on an anachronistic three-master attracts a mermaid when he plays his flute. It is not long before the cranes spot her as well and their attempt to catch her has tragic consequences. The fisherman summons the authorities and the official investigation into her death results in both the zoo and the hospital claiming her remains. In the end only the chalk outline of her body is left on the quay, but when the sailor draws that of his shadow next to it, their spirits unite and sail off into the sky.
