520 On December 15, 1968, The seasons change was screened in
response to, What trees do they plant?, a City of Chicago
film made to combat he image of police brutality during
the August, 1968 Democratic Convention. Bill Jersey and a
sizeable group of other activist filmmakers pooled their
footage which had been shot at the convention. They called
themselves Documentary Interlock. Their goal was to
produce a film that would counter the "official Chicago"
version of the convention. As Jersey recounts it, they
began with about 60 filmmakers that were committed to the
project. As the potential for any funding dwindled, so did
the number of committed filmmakers. One of the very few
left was Howard Alk. Alk focused on the interviews with
people who were assaulted by police during the convention.
Although you'll see interviews with Allen Ginsberg and
Rennie Davis, Alk singled out more mainstream individuals
who were there to peacefully march against the war, or who
were there simply to observe the convention. Howard
intercut their on-camera recollections with footage of
their brutal arrests.
