Notes
  • Alternate English title: The story of Zatoichi.
  • No. 1 in first series.
  • Release date: 04/18/1962.
  • Running time: 01:33:00.
  • Audie Bock explains that "Misumi's 30th film, designed as an ordinary sword drama, unexpectedly created a sensation and a new popular hero. Katsu Shintarō abandoned his handsome young man image and shaved his head to become the blind swordsman, an ex-masseur who tired of the contempt of men who could see and decided to learn a skill that would astound and intimidate them. The success of the humble and fundamentally good-hearted, yet street-wise and potentially ruthless Zatōichi resulted in a 10-year, 24- film series directed by Tanaka Tokuzō (q.v.), Mori Kazuo (q.v.), Ikehiro Kazuo (q.v.), Yasuda Kimiyoshi (q.v.), and Okamoto Kihachi, as well as more by Misumi. From 1968 on, Katsu became his own producer, and in 1972 began directing the series, which he still does for television."
