Notes
  • Literal title translation: New tales of Genji.
  • Frank Motofuji comments "In a rare treatment of The Tale of Genji, THE literary classic of Japan, Mori Kazuo's 87th film deals in a straightforward way with events in the life of Prince Genji up to his 26th year. Set in the early Heian period (ca. 9th century), the film takes up only the first eleven of 54 chapters. The underlying theme is Genji's oedipal attachment to his mother, and his search for a woman who resembles her. Ichikawa Raizō may not be everyone's image of the ideal prince-lover, but who can be? The sets and costumes are lavish, and the photography gorgeous though the colors have faded badly."
