518 Filmed in San Francisco, California.
520 The film begins with the image of a top hat. A painter
puts raw oils on bread, and eats it. The viewer then sees
what the artist sees: a naked female model and distorted
objects. Collaged figures move, as do objects. In this
sequence of object animation, forks and other silverware
move over the top hat, which is now seated on a bust. The
artist then takes out his eye, which can still see even
though disembodied. Occasionally the viewer sees the room
and environs from the point of view of the eye, which is
rolling on the floor. The bust is then seen in a cage,
after which the artist is shown wearing an eye patch.
Objects in the studio fall on him. Afterwards, the
artist's head is seen in the cage; then another man's head
takes his place. The plucked-out eye is still rolling, and
a neighbor unsuccessfully tries to shoot it. The eye rolls
out a window and onto the street below. The new artist
with the cage around his head walks down the street,
searching for his eye. The eye sits on a mound of dirt,
under a running water faucet, and a snail crawls across
it. Intercut are images of an African-American woman back
in the artist's studio, running across the room to the
door. This scene is repeated several times, with the woman
never reaching the door. San Francisco
520 streets become the backdrop for a chase of the eye through
the city. Finally the artist regains his eye, becoming the
original artist as seen at the beginning of the film.
