California, Berkeley coached by Ky Ebright. Shows campus
and campus life, crewmen getting up and arriving at the
club house; many scenes of practice on the Oakland
Estuary; newsreel footage of past victories.
520 8 Intertitles: Keen competition in a spectacular sport
inspires the crewman to a healthy and interesting daily
life -- The crewmen assemble in the club room for Coach Ky
Ebright's instructions for the day -- Our crewmen
contribute one practice each year to "The Adventures of
the Newsreel Cameraman" -- Newer recruits are at work on
rowing machines as their first lesson in oarsmanship --
The recruit first feels the water from a wide sixteen
oared barge -- A house full of racing shells affords many
an aspirant the thrill of the fastest rowing sport known -
- The sleek shell is propelled by brawn applied to these
hand made tubular spoon-bladed oars -- Power is developed
from leg drive made possible by the free running seat or
slide -- The oar while being securely locked in the
outrigger rotates and turns freely -- The coxwain's
functions are many and important -- He manipulates the
rudder by long tiller ropes -- He uses the grips to pound
the side for beating rhythm and attracting attention -- He
carries the stop watch which aids the stroke oarsman in
establishing and maintaining the pace -- He calls
instructions through his megaphone -- The eight oared
racing shell represents the most refined development in
"paper-thin" boat construction -- Slow motion reveals

his skill from coaches who follow near at hand -- Racing
starts are practiced -- Short races such as the 2000 meter
Olympic Games course are rowed at high speeds--36 to 45
strokes per minute -- Our crewman proudly strives to
follow California towing ancestry which broke Olympic
Games records by twto successive victories -- Amsterdam
