Clean
Maggie Cheung, Nick Nolte, Béatrice Dalle, Jeanne Balibar,
Maggie Cheung was awarded Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her portrayal of a junkie trying to get clean for the sake of her young son in Olivier Assayas’s moving drama of drugs, rock and roll, and family dynamics. After her rock musician husband dies from an overdose, heroin addict Emily (Cheung) must attempt recovery if she hopes ever to see her child, currently cared for by her husband’s parents. Her father-in-law (a surprisingly tender, poetic Nick Nolte) is, at least, receptive to reconciliation. The second of Cheung’s collaborations with Assayas, Clean finds both director and actress at their most humane and open.
