Reigniting a matrilineal legacy of jazz and opera and a patrilineal legacy of sermon and education, Oakland-based artist Gabriel Christian offers select adaptations from their project riff, composed of 365 entries on their @genderjuicy Instagram feed from 2017 through 2018. Christian’s work metabolizes the vernaculars of BlaQ diaspora—futurity, afrovivalism, faggotry—through body-based live performance and poetics.
