    In Conversation

The Black Aesthetic is an Oakland-based organization whose mission is to curate a collective understanding of black visual culture. TBA members Jamal Batts, Ra Malika Imhotep, and Leila Weefur guest curated this program.

Intimacy is a tight and imperfect space, full of possibility. For the black girls on an LA playground in Pizza Pizza Daddy-O, intimacy announces itself as a shifting formation of hand games and personalities. In Julie Dash’s Relatives, a son dances through family history with his mother close by. This Is the Home of Mrs. Levant Graham invites us into a loving and abundant encounter with the black domestic sphere. Evan’s Corner, a day in the life of a black boy, asks how can we find and prioritize intimacy with ourselves. In Slowly, This, two friends reflect on the ways race and gender impact their lives. In closing, we watch Bill T. Jones dance through loss.
