Please join us to celebrate the roots and resonance of rock in cinema with author David E. James, whose book Rock ’n’ Film: Cinema’s Dance with Popular Music inspired BAMPFA’s sizzling summer series, It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll. This series includes some of the best concert films of all time, including Monterey Pop, Wattstax, Stop Making Sense, The Last Waltz, and Dave Chappelle’s Block Party; influential fiction films King Creole (Elvis Presley’s favorite of his films) and The Harder They Come (the film starring Jimmy Cliff that brought reggae to an international audience); groundbreaking documentaries Don’t Look Back and The Decline of Western Civilization, and more.

We will begin at 5:30 PM in the Barbro Osher Theater, where David James, who teaches in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, will present an illustrated lecture exploring the rich legacy of cinema’s dance with popular music and what these films share with classic film musicals.

After the program, Curator's Circle members will join James and Associate Film Curator Kate MacKay, who organized the film series, for a delicious four-course dinner with wine pairing crafted by Babette chefs Joan Ellis and Patrick Hooker.
