Filmed against the backdrop of Tbilisi’s old stone walls, lanes, and apartment blocks, this award-winning debut feature presents the world of a middle-aged, unemployed, and drug-addicted protagonist, Checkie (Guga Kotetishvili), with remarkable touches of humor and pathos. Levan Koguashvili’s fine eye for character and intergenerational relationships gives depth to this drama in which more often than not it is the women—teachers, medical workers, or family members—who hold society together, balancing men’s foibles. Checkie is emblematic of Tbilisi’s run-down society. “Koguashvili uses the deteriorating streets and buildings of Tbilisi to eloquent effect, showcasing the almost ludicrous underground economy amid the semi-ruins” (Hollywood Reporter).
Levan Koguashvili studied film directing at the Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow and received a graduate degree from Tisch School of the Arts (NYU). He has a background in television journalism and works in narrative and documentary film. His other films include Women from Georgia, Blind Dates, and Gogita’s New Life.
