As part of this year's annual Les Blank Lecture, the Indigenous filmmakers Patricia Ferreira Pará Yxapy and Ariel Duarte Ortega, who made Bicycles of Nhanderu, engage in an illuminating conversation with Natalia Brizuela, professor of Film & Media and Spanish & Porguese at UC Berkeley about their filmmaking practice as members of the Mbyá-Guarani Cinema Collective. Also part of the Les Blank Lecture, the Indigenous filmmakers Milson Silva Guajajara and Jocy Guajara, who made Guardians of the Forest, speak with Luisa Lanna about the essential role of filmmaking in protecting their lands. A film editor, educator, and producer, Lanna has collaborated with the Brazilian Video in the Villages project since 2017, where she coordinated the workshops for this film. The second film made by the Mbyá-Guarani Cinema Collective, Patricia Ferreira Pará Yxapy and Ariel Duarte Ortega's Bicycles of Nhanderu depicts the everyday life of the Mbyá-Guarani in the filmmakers’ village of Koenju, in southern Brazil. It is centered on two young brothers—one of whom shares critical observations: “The whites always want to pay less and take more”—and several elders, guardians of traditional values and spirituality.

Guardians of the Forest
(Zawxiperkwe Ka’a: Guardiões da Floresta)

Jocy Guajajara, Milson Silva Guajajara, Brazil, 2019

The documentary Guardians of the Forest opens with a shot of a long fence lined with pieces of meat. The meaning of this becomes clear over the course of the film, made by two members of the Guardians of the Forest. This group has taken on the perilous work of patrolling the Indigenous lands of Caru, where they encounter illegal livestock grazing, logging operations, and land grabs. As their territorial demarcations are not enforced by the government, Indigenous assemblies negotiate these ongoing conflicts.
