Lena Wolff and Hope Meng: VOTE

Beginning one month prior to Election Day 2022, BAMPFA’s outdoor screen will present Bay Area artist Lena Wolff’s clarion call to civic engagement in the form of voting posters made in collaboration with the multidisciplinary designer Hope Meng. Initially launched in 2017, Wolff’s iconic poster series encourages viewers to make their voices heard at the ballot box in support of urgent and timely issues: for reproductive freedom, gun reform, trans rights, environmental justice, and democracy at large.

Lena Wolff is a visual artist, craftswoman, and activist for democracy who has lived and worked in the Bay Area since the early 1990s. In recent years, she has generated several self-initiated public art projects to contribute to dialogue and civic engagement, including a widespread anti-hate poster campaign and a public art initiative to boost voter participation that spread across the country in 2020. Her work was recently seen on BAMPFA’s outdoor screen in advance of the last US presidential election, and it will return this election season as a complement to our ongoing presentation of the OUTCRY series by Whitney Bradshaw.

Hope Meng is a designer who believes in the power of letters to communicate through both their content and their form. She is the designer behind Monogram Project, and the artist behind TEXT/TILE Studio. Hope lives and works in San Francisco, California.
