Paranoia abounds in this remake of the 1956 sci-fi horror film, where extraterrestrial “pod people” are breeding conformity in a culture immersed in the unconventional. Philip Kaufman updated Don Siegel’s classic, itself an adaptation of Jack Finney’s novel, to an age of fern encounters and ecology—San Francisco in the mid-1970s.
