Film Series/Exhibition Title:
Kelly Reichardt in Person
Description:

Adapted from stories by Maile Meloy, Certain Women depicts intersecting episodes in the lives of an attorney, an unspecified professional, a ranch hand, and a recent law school graduate. The vast landscape of Montana in winter—its bleakness and beauty effectively lensed by Christopher Blauvelt—is as much a character as the women portrayed. The physical distances the characters traverse evoke their alienated existences and the distances between their dreams and desires, and their work, loved ones, and daily lives. “Kelly Reichardt’s wonderful triptych of female character studies confirms her status as the quietest of great American filmmakers . . . it’s among her richest, most refined works” (Guy Lodge, Variety).
