Integration Report 1

Madeline Anderson assembled footage shot by a number of camera operators, including Richard Leacock and Albert Maysles, to construct this cinematic snapshot of the civil rights movement across the United States circa 1960, from Montgomery, Alabama, to Brooklyn and Washington, DC. Integration Report 1 includes excerpts from speeches and interviews with leaders of the movement including Robert Williams, Bayard Rustin, and Martin Luther King Jr., along with footage from protests around the country. We hear accounts of incidents of racist violence, including the murder of an African American man in police custody; witness the booking and arrest of protesters at lunch counter sit-ins; and see white women against Black bussing picketing a high school in Queens, New York, in opposition to its integration.
