Film Series/Exhibition Title:
Robert Altman at 100
Description:

Created for Dutch television and adapted for the cinema, this unconventional and direct biopic provides a balanced portrait of codependent brothers, artist Vincent (Tim Roth, filthy and magnetic) and art dealer Theo van Gogh (Paul Rhys, prim and syphilitic). “The theme—the bitter entanglement of art and commerce—holds [Robert] Altman in a vise of his choosing. He doesn’t go at it glancingly here” (Pauline Kael, New Yorker). The human relationships and labor of art making take center stage, as “masterpieces do not appear out of thin air but as a result of constant and unusually enervating struggle” (Derek Malcolm, Guardian).
