520 "It is the middle of the 19th century. On the spur of the
Caucasus a village nestles at the foot of the towering
mountains. It is ruled with the iron hand of the tasr's
officials and the cossacks they command. Deprived of their
rich pastures and allotted small unproductive parcels of
land, for which they pay rental to the landlords, they eke
out a meager living from the fields they till. Poor,
oppressed, they contemplate at least an appeal to the
authorities for redress of their grievances. The notion is
opposed by the moneyed local merchant, a tight-fisted
cooperator of the authorities. But the people have a
champion, the bold and dashing Zaur, who fears no one.
Three people asre especially dear to him: his beautiful
sister Fatima, his friend Murtaza, whom he calls brother,
and Syuver, the merchant's daughter, with whom he's in
love."--MOMA program notes.
