520 "In Ms. Marshall's 'Contenders,' Mark Obenhaus moves back
and forth between a high school gymnasium, shot in color
and a pink-toned black and white, and a void in which the
dancers seem to be moving through a dream. He isolates
individual dancers and parts of their bodies for an
episodic look that doesn't give much sense of the dance as
a linear whole. This is, in effect, a reworking of the
dance for film. The dancers are runners, moving to a score
by Pauline Oliveros that mixes bits of bright, shimmering
accordion music with the sound of a starter's gun and the
distant roar of a crowd. Stretching, falling, racing
slowly and briefly into one anothers' arms, they inhabit a
lonely world that suggests the final dreamlike run in the
film 'The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner. The
Dinizulu segment is a vivid and valuable record of the
late Nana Yao Opare Dinizulu, the founder of the company
in 1947, and of the impressive work the troupe has done in
popularizing African dance and social history in this
country. Several signature works of the company are
preserved here, including 'Gome, a Ghanaian square drum
solo performed by Kimati Dinizulu, and 'Gum Boot,' a South
African miners' dance, each of which would fit into any
program of post-modernist dance
520 comfortably. The pieces, danced to traditional music, also
include 'Adzabo,' a Ghanaian harvest dance for women that
is filled with subtle rhythmic shifts and accents, and
'Liwa Weche,' a song from the Congo, sung by Nyota Salama,
in which a woman mourns her husband's death in the mines"-
