It’s about a farm girl whose résistance is low to a city slicker who, unbeknownst only to her, plans to set her up as a prostitute in Marseilles. She is rescued by the lily farmhand Saturnin (Fernandel, cast against type for his finest role). But he cannot save her from her family; with her baby, Angèle is kept locked away like a dirty secret. When she emerges into the harsh Provençal light, it is thanks to the amour fou of a young mountain man and the grace of his fellow itinerant worker, perhaps the most noble of all Pagnol savages. The film, too, is saved from its melodramatic premise by love—of the land on which it is filmed, the much-traveled roads, the creaking windmills, the peasant farmhouse with its big kitchen table, to be seated at which marks one’s acceptance as a member of the human race."--Judy Bloch, Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive program note. 541 0 |3PFA 1620-01-16664. |aD0471 via D0466 |cdonation |d 04/16 /2015 |5CBPF 546 In French with optically printed English subtitles. 590 PFA 1620-01-16664.|aEdge code: Orwo.|aCONDITION NOTE: Inspected 2015/05/29 gc; very good; leaders intact; generational; scribed cues; light wear 655 7 Feature films.|2lcgft 690 French films. 700 1 Pagnol, Marcel,|d1895-1974,|efilm director,|efilm producer, |escreenwriter. 700 1 Willy,|d1915-1987,|edirector of photography. 700 1 Troeye, Suzanne de,|eeditor of moving image work. 700 1 Robert, André,|eeditor of moving image work. 700 1 Scotto, Vincent,|d1876-1952,|ecomposer (expression) 700 1 Giono, Jean,|d1895-1970.|tUn des Baumugnes. 700 1 Demazis, Orane,|d1904-1991,|eactor. 700 1 Poupon, Henri,|d1882-1953,|eactor. 700 1 Toinon, Annie,|eactor. 700 0 Fernandel,|d1903-1971,|eactor. 710 2 Films Marcel Pagnol,|eproduction company. 956 20160405 |bpfmcq|cCO 957 OCLC xref loaded 20160417 994 C0|bCUY
