520 This television program features jazz music structured
around a loose story of a musician who has lost his
girlfriend and accompanies his friend Quincy Jones (as
himself) on a tour of Japan. The program begins in the 300
Club in New York where Al Hirt plays two sets, Georgia on
my mind and Paris in the springtime. Quincy Jones is in
the audience talking to his friend, "Pete Clay," a
songwriter and musician who has broken up with his
girlfriend. Pete joins Quincy on his tour to Japan. Their
plane touches down in Sydney, Australia where Waltzing
Matilda is briefly heard. Quincy and Pete do some
sightseeing in Tokyo and then visit the rehearsal studio.
There Quincy, at the piano, rehearses Old black magic with
Nobuo Hara and his Sharps and Flats. Later that night at a
nightclub Nobuo and his group perform two sets, Apple
honey and Night in Tunisia. Quincy joins them at the piano
for Taste of honey. Quincy Jones plays trumpet in a duet
with the koto player, Kazuko Inano, in Blues for trumpet
and koto. "Pete Clay" sings Where or when with Quincy at
the piano. There are some night scenes in Tokyo and Pete
returns to his hotel's nightclub where he finds his lost
girlfriend, "Lori," performing a song he wrote, No more
talk. They are reunited and the program ends back
520 in the New York with Al Hirt performing When the saints go
marching in.
