520 "The third part of the Fanny Trilogy opens, some twenty
years after Fanny, with the confessions of Panisse on his
deathbed. True to form, these occasion something other
than tears—digressions so lengthy and so funny Panisse
forgets to die. The son he has raised with Fanny (with a
little help from 'godfather' César) is now old enough to
track down his real father. And so the story of Fanny and
Marius begins again. Love is revolution in every sense of
the word."--Judy Bloch, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific
Film Archive program note.

11/28 excellent CONDITION NOTE: Last inspected: 2005/12/
12; Good condition; used; mono lateral variable area track
--inherently low density and contrast and will be noisy;
Agfa b/w print from Kodak nitrate interneg from 1938 or
1936; in December 2005 PFA decided to exhibit newer print
from Kino, which had a softer image quality but superior
dual bilateral track and sharp, consistent laser subtitles
590 PFA 3500-01-16503. |aCONDITION NOTE: Inspected 2013/06/07
cv; very good condition; R4 is oversized (full reel); R1
series of light base scratches (5) right screen; all other
reels similar but to lesser extent; this print has been
shown previously at PFA. |aCONDITION NOTE: Inspected 2015/
02/13 cv; R4 head leader was crushed by can lid in spite
of hub in place prior to loan; R4 moved to metal can; no
change in condition from loan.
590 Note on print sources from gc 2005/12/13: "It appears that
the vintage and condition of the source material of the
two prints is comparable, a mid-century inter-negative
from nitrate positives. The PFA prints in AGFA material,
un-dated, are thought to be of a 60's vintage, but
certainly significantly older and may contain more silver,
appearing slightly higher contrast, and lower D-min (base
density), and appear brighter on screen. This set of
prints may also have slightly sharper picture. Beyond
these notions, the KINO prints have other advantages.
Although the picture image quality may be slightly softer
and slightly yellowish, the modern dual bilateral
soundtrack is louder and has less noise, the laser
subtitles are sharp, consistent in position and easier to
read.
