Politicians and planners came to believe Freud's underlying premise - that deep within all human beings were dangerous and irrational desires and fears. They were convinced that it was the unleashing of these instincts that had led to the barbarism of Nazi Germany. To stop it ever happening again they set out to find ways to control this hidden enemy within the human mind. Sigmund Freud's daughter, Anna, and his nephew, Edward Bernays, provided the centrepiece philosophy. The US government, big business, and the CIA used their ideas to develop techniques to manage and control the minds of the American people. But rather than a cynical exercise in manipulation, those in power believed that the only way to make democracy work and create a stable society was to repress the savage barbarism that lurked just under the surface of normal American life. 538 DVD. 590 PFA 0230-01-12495. |aCOPY-SPECIFC DESCRIPTION: 1 videodisc of 2 (d1) (58:43 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences ; 4 3/4 in. |aCONDITION NOTE: Last checked: 2008/07/08 Excellent condition. 600 10 Freud, Sigmund,|d1856-1939. 600 10 Bernays, Edward L.,|d1891-1995. 600 10 Freud, Anna,|d1895-1982. 600 10 Dichter, Ernest,|d1907-1991. 650 0 Public opinion|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Political socialization|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Political socialization|zGermany|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 National socialism|zGermany|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)|zGermany|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Motivation research (Marketing) 650 0 Consumers|xPsychology. 650 0 Consumer behavior. 650 0 Consumption (Economics)|xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Public relations|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Nazi propaganda|xPsychological aspects. 655 7 Television.|2mim 655 7 Mini-series.|2mim 655 7 Documentaries and factual works.|2mim 690 British films. 700 1 Curtis, Adam,|d1955- 710 2 British Broadcasting Corporation. 710 2 BN Publishing. 935 GLADN17748451 941 0 PFA 0230-01-12495.
