Notes
  • Alternate title: The treasure house of loyal vassals.
  • Lisa Berkson notes that "based on a Kabuki play, Chushingura is a classic Japanese tale of loyalty and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. There were several film versions made, and this one differs from the others in that there is no scene of the 47 rōnin committing suicide. The movie is an attack on the empty institutional society of Tokugawa that denigrated human dignity for the sake of superficial appearances and embodies all the aspects of bushidō that are found embedded in the Japanese culture."
  • Pacific Film Archive collection; non-circulating. CBPF.
  • Director of photography, Watanabe Takashi ; art director, Kamizato Yoshizō ; music composer, Saitō Ichirō ; sound, Ōsumi Masao ; lighting, Katō Shōnojō, Itō Sadaichi.
