Notes
  • Akiko Mikumo comments that "Mizoguchi Kenji's 90th film was made two years before his death in 1956. In scenes that bring to mind ink drawings, Mizoguchi unfolds Chikamatsu's world of tragedy and love in a repressed feudal society. This is contrasted with the dramatic acting which vividly depicts the colorful and turbulent life of the merchant class, which despite its low social status economically dominated the ruling samurai class. This combination of visual subtlety and dramatic realism aided by Miyagawa Kazuo's photography and Hasegawa Kazuo's performance as the sensitive lover makes the film one of Mizoguchi's outstanding late works. As a historical note, the film was made seven years after the 1947 Constitution which finally decriminalized adultery for women, one of the last remnants of feudalism."
