The ceremony of conferring to him the grade of craftsman is taking place in the presence of skilled coopers, who are very pleased with their pupil. But Ilya has still to gain the recognition of his country men who are still mistrusting the young man. He makes a barrel; the man who ordered it doubts if it is good enough. To prove the contrary, Ilya takes the barrel on a high river-bank and lets it fall into the water. Before doing so, he bets with the hadja Thal, in case the barrel stands the proof, he cuts off hadja's beard. The barrel remains intact, and the hadja is deprived of his beard. But according to the tradition, a craftsman who throws his barrel into a floating stream must be able to get it back himself.
