520 After the warning title and opening credits, the film
consists of clear leader broken by consistently spaced
black frames. The black frames' intervals begin at every
24 frames, then decrease to 12 frames, and continually
decrease until the black frames are separated by only one
clear frame. This creates on the screen a flicker effect.
The soundtrack during the flicker section is a rumbling
machine-like noise. During the opening title and credits,
popular music from the early 1900s--from cinema's young
days when it was still a sideshow novelty and called
"flickers"--is played. Gradually the black frames swallow
the clear ones until black and clear frames appear in
equal increments, then the black frames predominate. The
clear frames fight back, and the black frames return to
appearing every 12 frames, then 24 frames, and then
disappear.
