520 Ellen returns from a long day at the defense plant and
greets her baby's nanny, who informs her that a letter
from her husband Steve has arrived. The film then cuts to
Steve aboard a destroyer, writing a letter to Ellen.
During a flashback sequence, we learn that Steve
volunteered for service in the Pacific, leaving his new
wife behind. When the ship's crew receives an order to
fire torpedos at enemy ships, Steve finishes writing his
letter. Shortly after that, the ship is struck by enemy
fire. Returning home from work, Ellen finds another letter
from Steve. She immediately reads it and cherishes her
husband's devotion and patriotism. As soon as the finishes
reading the letter, the doorbell rings. Ellen answers the
door to receive a telegram informing her of Steve's death.
She remembers the following words from her husband's
letter: "Freedom comes high. No matter what happens I
shall always be with you."
