The film then cuts to Steve aboard a destroyer, writing a letter to Ellen. During a flashback sequence, we learn that Steve volunteered for service in the Pacific, leaving his new wife behind. When the ship's crew receives an order to fire torpedos at enemy ships, Steve finishes writing his letter. Shortly after that, the ship is struck by enemy fire. Returning home from work, Ellen finds another letter from Steve. She immediately reads it and cherishes her husband's devotion and patriotism. As soon as the finishes reading the letter, the doorbell rings. Ellen answers the door to receive a telegram informing her of Steve's death. She remembers the following words from her husband's letter: "Freedom comes high. No matter what happens I shall always be with you." 590 PFA 1608-01-1699. |aCONDITION NOTE: Last checked: July 1, 2002, difficulty holding frame line. 650 0 World War, 1939-1945|vDrama. 650 0 Naval battles. 650 0 Navy spouses. 650 0 War widows. 650 0 Last letters before death. 650 0 Love-letters. 655 7 Shorts.|2mim 655 7 Naval combat drama.|2mim 700 1 Allen, Lewis,|d1905-2000. 700 1 Thompson, Stuart,|cA.S.C. 700 1 Craig, James,|d1912-1985. 700 1 Britton, Barbara,|d1919-1980. 700 1 Cook, Donald,|d1901-1961. 700 1 Kellaway, Cecil,|d1891-1973. 700 1 Paige, Mabel,|d1880-1954. 700 1 Quigley, Charles. 710 1 United States.|bNavy. 935 GLADN184893761 954 20120801|bMarcive Authority Bib 956 20140224|bPFA migration/merge load 957 OCLC xref loaded 20140928 993 20130624|bGov Doc 993 20140903|bGov Doc Federal 994 01|bCUY
