520 A pithed frog is dissected to allow viewers to observe the
three chambers of the heart in action. Pithing destroys
the brain and spinal chord so that the frog feels no pain.
An explanation of diastole and systole is provided. A pin
is hooked to the apex of the ventricle to record the
heartbeat on a kymograph.
