Notes
  • Release date: 05/21/1966.
  • Akiko Mikumo comments that "Ikehiro Kazuo's 20th film, a remake of Toyada Shiro's 1953 Daiei failure, is neither an accurate nor successful adaptation of Mori Ogai's novel. Ikehiro, known for his period action-style films, is obviously in foreign territory with a literary movie, but his clever use of traditional architectural features juxtaposed with the characters to convey human tensions and emotions, and his portrayal of a mistress's life in Meiji Japan, are worthy of note."

Otama, daughter of a poor candy vendor, becomes the mistress of a man whom she believes to be a widower and owner of a prosperous dry goods store. The man is in fact married with children, and is a despised loan shark who takes money from the poor without qualms. Totally enraptured with Otama, this usurer establishes her and her father in separate houses and generously gives them gifts including silk taken as interest from Oshige, a poor cloth dealer who does business with the sewing teacher, Otama's neighbor. Otama's satisfaction with her situation gradually crumbles as she discovers the truth about her benefactor." 546 In Japanese with English subtitles. 590 PFA 3500-01-3869. |aCONDITION NOTE: Described: 1976; Print in good condition; subtitles satisfactory. 650 0 Women|vDrama|zJapan. 650 0 Love|vDrama|zJapan. 650 0 Mistresses|vDrama|zJapan. 655 7 Historical re-creations.|2mim 655 7 Melodrama.|2mim 655 7 Features.|2mim 655 7 Trailers and promos.|2mim 690 Japanese films. 700 1 Ikehiro, Kazuo,|d1929- 700 1 Narusawa, Masashige. 700 1 Mori, Ōgai,|d1862-1922. 700 1 Hayashi, Hideki. 700 1 Munekawa, Nobuo. 700 1 Nakami, Yoshio. 700 1 Ikeno, Sei. 700 1 Saegusa, Yasuyuki. 700 1 Taguma, Gentarō. 700 1 Nakashizu, Tatsuji. 700 1 Okazaki, Akira. 700 1 Wakao, Ayako,|d1933- 700 1 Ozawa, Eitaro. 700 1 Yamamoto, Gaku. 700 1 Sugata, Michiko. 700 1 Yamaoka, Hisano. 700 1 Mito, Mitsuko. 700 1 Fujiwara, Reiko. 700 1 Ii, Tomosaburo. 710 2 Daiē, Kabushiki Kaisha. 740 02 Gan--trailer. 935 GLADN50848653 941 0 PFA 3500-01-3869. 35 mm. print 954 20120801|bMarcive Authority Bib 956 20140224|bPFA migration/merge load 957 OCLC xref loaded 20140928 994 02|bCUY
