520 "Filmed in loving appreciation of the dadaist style by
Hermut Herbst, this work traces the history of the Dada
movement from its founding in 1916 in Zurich at Cabaret
Voltaire to the art auction houses of today. Highly
entertaining this film will interest the general public as
well as art history classes and avant garde film
audiences. Included are interviews with Hans Richter an
Dr. Richard Huelsenbeck, survivors of the early days of
the movement. Excerpts of dadaist films are shown along
with their paintings, masks, collage, sculptures, poetry
and manifestoes. While cocentrating on the Dadaist
movement in Germany, the film also touches on the French
surrealist and the Italian futurist movements. Newsreel
footage of the Wilhelminian Age, World War I, and the
German revolution of 1918-1921 are used to give an
historical background to Dadism. The most chilling
sequence is an excerpt from a 1940 Nazi newsreel
announcing the death of Dada and showing examples of
officially approved art, giant sculptures of muscle-bound
supermen"--One Way Films catalogue.
546 Narration in English, some German dialogue with English
titles.
