  • Audie Bock comments that "Masumura's 32nd film falls into the mid-sixties preoccupation he had with feminine psychology and sexuality. Wakao, playing an innocent though amorously determined girl at the beginning, accomplishes the change to a tough, man-eating prostitute with marvelous skill. Full of gore but redeemed by Miyagawa's always superb photography, the film can be considered either horror or melodrama. The myth of the woman who takes revenge on all men for mistreatment by a few, not present in Tanizaki's story where the tattooed girl only seeks realization of her own true nature, adds dimension to director-writer Shindō's script, and the sensual focus of Masumura's direction foretells later concerns of directors such as Ōshima and Shinoda."
