Leroy, Michael Smith ; set design, Power Boothe ; editors, Mark Fischer, Michael Smith. 511 1 Michael Smith. 520 American performance artist Michael Smith's alter ego, "regular guy" Mike, has cable TV installed in his home and, due to a technical mishap, his ordinary domestic activities are inadvertently cablecast to the world through his re-wired television. A fast-talking agent promises him cable stardom, re-making his image and marketing his life as a spectacle to be scrutinized and consumed by the audience. In a wry twist on the concept of "public access" cable, Smith subverts the medium's one-way transmission. With comic (and prescient) irony, he satirizes the banality of television and its insinuation into the daily life of Americans, while exposing the absurdity of the image-making machine. 541 0 PFA 0750-01-11089.
