  • Akiko Mikumo comments that "Kinugasa Teinosuke's 94th film, the first Japanese experiment with Eastmancolor, won the 1954 Grand Prix at Cannes and an Oscar for Best Costume Design the same year. It ran for 47 weeks in New York's Guild Theatre, a record at the time for a foreign film, and was acclaimed outside Japan for its formalistic Kabuki style of acting, exotic ritualistic richness, and color subtleties. In Japan, the film was regarded as one of Kinugasa's failures, largely because of the ordinary quality of its period style. Nevertheless, the film is an outstanding example of the period-style genre because of the great acting of Hasegawa Kazuo and the panoramic photography of Sugiyama Kōhei, both veterans of this form."
