520 "Based on an actual event occurring in 1935, this curious
French film tells the story of a female pilot who,
supported by her husband, a provincial garage-owner, wins
the world solo flying record for women. While it is the
chef-d'oeuvre of Jean Grémillon (considered by many to be
one of the finest French filmmakers of the Thirties and
Forties), Le Ciel Est à Vous has remained all but unknown
outside of France. Georges Sadoul, in his "Dictionary of
Films," explains: "The fighting in the spring and summer
of 1944 disorganized the French cinema and prevented this
beautiful film from achieving the success it deserved. Its
images have much of the feeling of neorealism but its lack
of success prevented it from becoming the seminal film of
a French neorealist movement"--Pacific Film Archive
program note.
