Rebellion, a group of African and African American independent film and video artists that formed at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1970s and 1980s. The group--including Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, Haile Gerima, Billy Woodberry, Jamaa Fanaka, and Zeinabu irene Davis--shared a desire to create alternatives to the dominant modes of narrative, style, and practice in American cinema, works that reflected the full complexity of Black experiences. This landmark collection of essays and oral histories examines the creative output of the L.A. Rebellion, contextualizing the group's film practices and offering sustained analyses of the wide range of works, with particular attention to newly discovered films and lesser-known filmmakers. Based on extensive archival work and preservation, this collection includes a complete filmography of the movement, over 100 illustrations (most of which are previously unpublished), and a bibliography of primary and secondary materials. This is an indispensible sourcebook for scholars and enthusiasts, establishing the key role played by the L.A. Rebellion within the histories of cinema, Black visual culture, and postwar art in Los Angeles"--Provided by publisher. 563 Black printed cloth.|5CU-BANC 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 African American motion picture producers and directors |zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Independent filmmakers|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Independent films|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Experimental films|zCalifornia|zLos Angeles|xHistory|y20th century. 650 7 African American motion picture producers and directors. |2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00799269 650 7 Experimental films.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00918452 650 7 Independent filmmakers.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00968926 650 7 Independent films.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01738681 650 7 Regissörer.|2sao 650 7 Film|xpolitiska aspekter.|2sao 650 7 Film|xsociala aspekter.|2sao 650 7 Filmregissörer.|2sao 650 7 Filmproduktion.|2sao 650 7 Film och samhälle.|2sao 650 7 Filmpolitik.|2sao 650 7 Independentfilm.|2sao 650 7 Afro-amerikaner i filmen.|2sao 650 7 Diskriminering av afro-amerikaner.|2sao 650 7 Svarta, filmer gjorda av, USA.|2sfit 650 7 Regissörer, svarta, USA.|2sfit 650 7 Oberoende film, USA.|2sfit 650 7 Film.|0(DE-588)4017102-4|2gnd 650 7 Videokunst.|0(DE-588)4188229-5|2gnd 650 7 Schwarze.|0(DE-588)4116433-7|2gnd 651 7 California|zLos Angeles.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204540 651 7 Los Angeles, Calif.|0(DE-588)4036361-2|2gnd 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Field, Allyson Nadia,|d1976-|eeditor. 700 1 Horak, Jan-Christopher,|eeditor. 700 1 Stewart, Jacqueline Najuma,|d1970-|eeditor. 752 United States|bCalifornia|dOakland. 954 20161014|bMarcive Authority Bib 956 20161010|btbpr 956 20160917|btses|cMT 956 20160323 |bpfmcq|cCC 957 OCLC xref loaded 20170917 994 C0|bCUY
