520 The story, based on a stage play by Andre Obey and Denys
Amiel, is a psychological drama akin to Madame Bovary. A
woman who loves music and poetry is suffocating in the
stultifying atmosphere of a provincial town and a marriage
to a vulgar merchant husband. Instead of opening out the
play by use of locations, Dulac turned to a sustained
exploration of Madame Beudet's inner life through an array
of stylistic devices to convey Madame Beudet's imaginative
world, an objectification of subjective feelings through
the power of association.
