520 "'The Last Frontier' portrays the crossing of the Pyrenées
by the German philsopher of Jewish origin, Walter Benjamin
(Berlin 1892-Portbou 1940), from Banyuls-sur-mer to
Portbou where he committed suicide in 1940, following the
news that he was to be repatriated. The hours of the slow,
painful crossing on foot of the Pyrenean mountains which
separate France from Spain, accompanied by other German
fugitives who were escaping from the Nazis, leads into a
series of flashbacks which place some of the biographical
aspects and thoughts of the philosopher. The film plays
with video and cinema images, with the concept of
representation and simulation, with fiction and document.
An interview with Jean Selz, a French art critic who met
Walter Benjamin in Ibiza during the 1930s, and the voice
of the photographer Gisèle Freund, bear witness to their
friendship with the philosopher. The figure of a narrator
links document and fiction playing the role of
investigator into Benjamin's life and work."--Kronos Plays
& Films S.A. promotional brochure.
