The popular French actor André Bourvil is superbly cast against type as the nemesis cop, Matteï, a straight guy who lives alone with cats (Melville's). We learn his routine; he's a male Jeanne Dielman and can twist the knife when needed. Twisting Matteï's handle is the police commissioner who learned his lessons well from the Gestapo: everyone's guilty. Typical of Melville, the exciting moments in this caper are not the violent ones; the thrill is in the camera, with its gaze of surveillance and fraternity. Long live the guilty" --Judy Bloch, Pacific Film Archive film notes. 538 VHS NTSC. 546 In French with English subtitles. 562 Uncut European version. 590 PFA 0500-01-13822. |aCONDITION NOTE: Last checked: 2010/06 /21 Superscript throughout: "Property of Rialto Pictures." 655 7 Features.|2mim 655 7 Crime drama.|2mim 690 French films. 700 1 Melville, Jean-Pierre,|d1917-1973,|edirection,|ewriting. 700 1 Dorfmann, Robert,|d1912-1999,|eproduction. 700 1 Decae, Henri,|ecamera/lighting. 700 1 Meurisse, Théobald,|eproduction design. 700 1 Dubus, Marie-Sophie,|eediting. 700 1 Delon, Alain,|d1935-|ecast. 700 0 Bourvil,|d1917-1970,|ecast. 700 1 Volonté, Gian Maria,|d1933-|ecast. 700 1 Montand, Yves,|d1921-1991,|ecast. 700 1 Crauchet, Paul,|ecast. 700 1 Collet, Pierre,|d1914-1977,|ecast. 710 2 Films Corona. 710 2 Rialto Pictures LLC. 941 0 PFA 0500-01-13822.
