520 "Brakhage made this film by assembling mothwings, leaves,
flowers, stems, grasses, and seeds, and placing them upon
an adhesive strip of translucent Mylar editing tape. This
base strip was then covered with another clear strip of
Mylar, the materials being sandwiched between the two. The
16mm Mylar tape was perforated with sprocket holes. Clear
leader was attached to the beginning of the film and the
title was written in with black ink. Black leader attached
to the end has a white "By Brakhage" scratched in. The
Mylar tape creates a light greenish yellow backdrop for
the rapidly moving materials. The projector light passes
through the natural matter, disclosing their complex
cellular structures, veins, and surface imperfections.
Muddy earth colors predominate: sepia, blood-red,
cranberry, blackberry, mulberry, dirt-brown, spring green,
pine-green, and black. The placement of object varies;
sometimes an entire length of a stem fills the left side
of a series of frames; on other occasions, the stem might
be broken up, mixed with crushed leaves or petals, and
scattered throughout the frame. The speed in which the
materials pass through the frame, and the size of the
materials within the frame, varies from section to
section. The sporadic passages of clear, pale, greenish-
yellow-toned Mylar punctuates the film, which ends with
the image of a single moth wing."--Russett and Brabner,
Stan Brakhage: a guide to references and resources.
520 An experimental film which presents a fluttering light
collage created by pasting moth wings and bits of plants
between strips of mylar tape and running the tape through
an optical printer.
