520 Mary Harding, the overworked wife of a parsimonious man,
leaves a legacy in trust to a minister to provide
occasional presents of finery to her daughter, who is also
named Mary. Scandal erupts when village gossips see the
shabbily dressed girl in church wearing an extravagent hat
purchased by the minister. They summarily snub Mary,
contact the church board, and inform the father of their
suspicions. In a fit of anger, the father destroys the hat
and the girl's tenuous happiness. The minister quells the
scandal, showing the mother's letter about the legacy to
the assembled indignant gossips and church board members,
the father, and the girl. The gossips are red-faced, and
all ends happily.
