Northern Wonderlands and Russia, the S.S. Reliance of the
Hamburg-American Line visits the beautiful and
historically interesting places presented in this film.
This map shows the Reliance's extensive itinerary -- From
New York--northward bound -- Iceland island of contrasts.
Arriving at Reykjavik -- The fish market -- The House of
Parliament -- One of Iceland's many hot springs -- Codfish
being salted and dried -- A beautiful waterfall at
Thingvellir meeting place of the world's oldest parliament
-- Crossing the polar circle -- Passing lonely Jan Mayen
Island en route to Spitzbergen -- At Magdalena Bay, within
650 miles of the North Pole -- The ship's motor launces
permit a close inspection of the glaciers at Cross Bay --
King's Bay starting point of several North Pole flights --
This hangar was erected for the dirigible "Norge" used in
the Nobile North Pole flight -- The Amundsen Expedition
Monument -- A relic of old whaling days -- The Reliance
now points her prow southward to Norway land of the
midnight sun -- Hammerfest most northerly town in Europe -
- The Meridian Column commemorating the completion of the
Greenwich Meridian Survey -- The North Cape extreme
northern end of Europe -- The fog and mist, partly
obscuring the North Cape, lift, presenting these
magnificent views of the midnight sun -- Southward along
the irregular Norwegian coastline -- Lyngseidet by
Stolkjaerre to a Lapp encampment. These "Nomads of the
north" rely principally on their herds of reindeer for
subsistence -- Deck sports are resumed as the Reliance
continuess about 500 miles southward to-- Reel 2:

Tryggvason -- The 13th century Trondheim Cathedral of
Norman-Gothic architecture -- Norwegian girls in colorful
costumes -- The heavy timbers are securely and carefully
fitted without the use of nails -- By motor to the famous
Lerfoss waterfall -- Sailing up the beautiful Geiranger
Fjord -- At the fjord's edge, hay is gathered and loaded--
not into wagons--but into boats!!! -- Into the Hjörung
Fjord to Oye -- From Oye over a magnificent mountain road
through the Norangsdal to-- -- The Jostedalsbre Europe's
largest glacier -- Djupvasnytten (deep water lake) -- The
Seven Sisters Falls -- wash day -- Hay is dried on racks -
- Spinning and weaving.
